The Bottleneck
Lawrence, Kansas

Bands: Once a Hero, and a couple others.

After a rather restful night at a Days Inn, we headed out to drive across the beautiful state of Missouri (We say it Miz-ZUR-uh.) About halfway between St. Louis and Kansas City we stopped for lunch and ran into OZARKLAND (see picture above.) Any mindless tourist trap is a must-see for Once a Hero, so we took a look around. They sold, well, ...stuff. Purses, "authentic" handicrafts, toys, fireworks, belt buckles, confederate paraphanalia, and all sorts of neccessities. Alex asked if they had any Missuruh T-Shirts, but they just said no. We're not sure if they got the joke, but that's probably because they pronounce it that way. Wow, we really are culturally insensitive. The rest of the drive to Lawrence went off without a hitch. We arrived a couple hours early, so we went into Borders, read their music magazines, and then walked around town for a bit.

Browsing the shops along Lawrence's main drag, Adam & Adam stumbled across a jayhawk (U of K's mascot) dressed up as a cow (no idea why.)

Adam wondered about the gender of the jayhawk-dressed-up-as-a-cow.

He found some udders, so we're gonna go with female. But for all we know, it could have been a male jayhawk crossdressing as a female cow. Ah, the many mysteries of Lawrence.

We finally decided to eat at a mexican restaurant (we just couldn't wait for California and Texas) and had some yummy 75 cent tacos. Mmmm... Finally we played our show at the Bottleneck, same place as last year. Because it was Monday, it was an open-mike night, not to mention the middle of U of K's final exams, so there weren't too many people there. We still enjoyed playing there, however. We had to leave as soon as we were done so we could drive another 2 1/2 hours west to Salina, KS where Doug's grandparents live. Just as we were approaching their neighborhood, we got caught by a freight train that slowed down, stopped, waited for 20 minutes, started backing up, then stopped again. At this point, we snapped and took the "long way around." Tommorrow is the drive through amazingly boring western Kansas and another exciting show at No Excuses in Denver. See you there!
